WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES CELEBRATION HAVE FOR YOU?
Festizaje is a cultural integration project born in 2004 from the collaboration between the Excma. Provincial Council of León, the Hon. Villafranca del Bierzo City Council and the Bumtaka Association.
Throughout these years, Fiestizaje has become a reference among Musical Festivals in Northern Spain, attracting a growing number of attendees every year thanks to the quality of the performances, the wide range of workshops, the undeniable appeal of Villafranca del Bierzo, on the Camino de Santiago, and its free nature.
The event is celebrated during the summer period in the month of July, with its dates coinciding year after year with the third weekend of this month. The programming activities begin on Friday afternoon, and extend throughout Saturday to end on Sunday night.
The basis of Fiestizaje is based on musical performances and the craft market, completing the program with circus and theater performances, as well as workshops taught by great dance and percussion professionals; We also reserve some surprises that make each year the festival a unique experience.
Fiesta and Villafranca del Bierzo
Although the idea of Festizaje was born as a result of the concern and the need to take the ideas of a group of young members of the Bumtaka Association further, the realization of the first edition of the event is undoubtedly due to the wealth and generosity of the year Jacobeo 2004.
It is not very clear if Festizaje chose the place where it is celebrated or it was the other way around; What is clear is that the unique and unique character of this festival is closely linked to said place.
The environment in which Festizaje takes place is the medieval town of Villafranca del Bierzo, popularly known as “little Compostela”. This municipality, located at the confluence of the Valcarce and Burbia rivers, is the Jacobean town par excellence and an almost obligatory stopping point on the route that pilgrims make towards Santiago, given the artistic and natural beauty that come together in this town.
On the Camino de Santiago, Villafranca was an important town, because if a pilgrim arrived here injured, and prevented from continuing the journey, he could receive the same benefits and honors as having arrived in Santiago.
According to data provided by the Pilgrim Reception Office in Santiago de Compostela, 2019 ended with 347,578 pilgrims collecting their Compostela after having traveled at least 100 km of the Camino, 55% of whom did so along the French way.
